McGill Rose Garden Sponsors Herb Garden
at Presbyterian Hospital

Visitors at Presbyterian Hospital can now enjoy a new herb garden sponsored by McGill Rose Garden at the Jack Matney Memorial Labyrinth. The garden, planted adjacent to the labyrinth, is located in the interior courtyard of the hospital at 200 Hawthorne Lane.

Presbyterian Hospice and Palliative Care, instrumental in bringing the labyrinth to the hospital, has recently partnered with McGill on projects such as the labyrinth’s herb garden, the Festival of Wreaths Open House, and the 2008 Doors of Hope campaign.

Eric Ritchie, the McGill’s Executive Director, designed and installed this unique garden. Ritchie, a Certified Horticultural Therapist, incorporated herbs rich in symbolism from both Eastern and Western religions. He has incorporated traditional herbs such as rosemary, lavender and sage which are known for their soothing, aromatic properties.

Designed by architect and artist Tom Schulz, the 40’ hand-drawn, acid-etched design was inspired by the 14th century labyrinth at the Chartres Cathedral in France. Today, many churches and hospitals are incorporating labyrinths as places of meditation and spiritual contemplation. Schulz, recognized nationally for his unique labyrinth designs, has also created a labyrinth at the Myers Park Baptist Church in Charlotte.

The McGill Rose Garden is proud to be a part of this exciting outreach project. Visit the labyrinth at Presbyterian Hospital, located at 200 Hawthorne Lane.

McGill Rose Princess Inauguration

On Saturday, November 10th, 2007, the first official Rose Princesses of the garden were sworn in at the garden. Princesses, ages 4 to 10, were appointed as official ambassadors of the McGill Rose Garden by Joy McGill, wife of Henry McGill, founder of the garden. Officiating the ceremony was Hale Mast, Board Chair.

The program provided an opportunity for each girl to learn about a rose in the garden, and share her knowledge with others.

19 princesses were escorted by their fathers, uncles, grandfathers or guardians. The ceremony kicked off a week that was officially designated by the mayor of Charlotte as “Father Daughter Week.”

Princesses received a rose, a certificate of royal responsibilities, a Rose Princess sash and tiara, and enjoyed festivities throughout the garden.
